A little bit of everything in my life!

REVIEW: Khroma Beauty – Kourtney’s Kardazzle Palette

Yes, the Kardashians have now launched their own make up range – it was only a matter of time eh? I have to say I was skeptical when I first heard it, yet another celebrity launch *yawn* but I have to say once I heard about the Kardazzle Palettes I was eager to get a closer look.

Image

As part of the range, each of the three sisters, Kim, Kourtney and Khloe has designed her own palette which allows us to recreate their individual looks. Each palette contains eight eye shadows, a blusher, a bronzer and a highlighter and retails at €16.95.

For the past week, I’ve been trying out Kourtney’s Kardazzle and at first, I was surprised at the size of the palette which is not much bigger than a credit card but it’s neatness allows it to be carried easily in a small handbag for nights out or day long event such as weddings where top ups are always needed.

Image

The appearance of the palette left me a little disappointed – the plastic printed casing certainly doesn’t have a luxury feel to it such as the Urban Decay Naked Palette but it is about half the price I suppose! So what does it look like inside then?

Image

ImageThe top row of eyeshadows are matt and the first two quite pale so would be suitable for highlighting the lid and brow bone. While the two colours on the top right give a much better colour pay off and can be used all over the lid for a neutral, everyday look.

Image

The bottom row of shadows are full of sparkle and really rich colours which can be combined to give a create a more smokey, evening look . They are easy to work with and I didn’t find much fall out from them. The two shades on the right could also be used as highlighters.

Image

The blush, highlighter & bronzer are all contained in a pull out tray underneath the shadows. As you can see from the swatches, the blush is a rosy pink shade which is complimented by the creamy highlighter, this looks a lot whiter in the palette than it does when applied – both items need to be blended well. The bronzer however, is a rather muddy brown and I would suggest a light hand when using this to avoid a dirty face!

Overall, this palette is very good value for money and I will certainly continue to use it for daytime looks.

Other items from the current range include Kim’s Au Natural Lip Set which looks interesting, a Mascara Quartet and the Shebang Eye Transformation Kit which range from €17.95 to €26.95 and can be purchased from Cloud10 Beauty right now!

* This item was kindly received as a PR sample

Some New Gear

I’ve treated myself to some new running/fitness clothes over the last few weeks – I needed to replace a few well worn items and also, due to the fact that I’ve lost over 2 stone in the past 9 months or so, some stuff doesn’t fit me anymore.

My first purchases came from Lifestyle Sports where I picked up a few bits that were part of their sale:

Image

Under Armour Water Resistant Storm Hoodie: I haven’t had a chance to test out it’s water resisting properties as of yet but am intrigued. This is very cosy if a little big in the fit, I bought a size small but think an extra small may have been a better option.

Image

Nike Pro Compression Hyperwarm Crewneck: This is a great base layer which I will most likely wear until it falls apart as I’m an avid fan. I usually find Nike clothing pretty true to size and this top is no different, a perfect fit.

Image

Nike Slim Fit Long Sleeve Cover Up: I LOVE this top so much – not only is it made from breathable dri-fit material but it is so comfortable and warm. In fact, my grá for it made me purchase a second one, this time in blue! Of course, I couldn’t just buy one thing especially as there is free delivery over €50 (any excuse) so I also picked up these tights which I haven’t gotten a chance to wear yet:

Image

Adidas Response 3/4 Tights: I’m not a huge fan of Adidas gear as a rule as I find it doesn’t seem to suit my shape but a friend recommended these to me. As I said, I haven’t worn these yet but did try them on and find the size small is a little big but hopefully tied tightly, they won’t slip down builders bum style!

My sister alerted me to the fact that Lidl were doing a fitness range this week so I popped in on Monday with the hope of picking up a kettle bell but I was too late, they were gone. I did however, pick up the last 2 pairs of 3/4 tights for the bargain price for €7.99 each and have to say size wise (I got extra small), they are perfect!

Wednesday Wondering

Popped out today to pick up a nice, warming soup and as I joined the queue of hungry lunchers at the local butcher’s deli counter, I couldn’t help but notice that almost everyone was choosing meat of some sort in their sandwich/wrap/roll/salad. Personally, I couldn’t give a monkey’s uncle what anyone eats on Ash Wednesday or any other day of the year but it got me thinking about how in some ways, we have certainly changed as a society over the past decade or two.

When I was a child, nobody would have even dreamed of eating meat on the first day of Lent but today, nobody seemed to give it a second thought!

However, when it comes to other issues such as the legalisation of abortion in certain cases which would have saved the lives of women such as Savita Halappanavar, Ireland is still a society of old.

REVIEW: Gel-Lac Manicure

Recently I managed to grow my nails a little beyond the stumps they usually are and decided to celebrate by getting a 2 week manicure. I’ve previously tried Gelish, OPI Axxium and Shellac, none of which lasted more than a week on my nails without chipping and/or peeling off. At first, I suspected that perhaps the nail technician may not have been the best as I tried Shellac and Gelish at the same salon however, I ventured to another place for the OPI manicure and even tested Shellac again but no luck.

A colleague went to a salon close to work that offered Gel-Lac 2 week formula and was very impressed with both the longevity of the manicure and the selection of shades available so I decided to try it for myself and have to say I’m very happy – so happy in fact, that I’m going back tomorrow for a soak off and colour change!

So here are my nails on day 1:

And here are my nails today, day 18:

As you can see, besides quite a lot of nail growth, my manicure is still perfect and all for only €20 including a little nail art on my ring fingers – hopefully, I’ll be just as satisfied after tomorrow’s appointment.

A Change of Direction

As I mentioned in my previous post, I changed my lifestyle in 2012 by simply deciding to get off my arse!!

I’d tried running previously but the bug never really bit me so I didn’t lasted very long at it.
Last March, Action Breast Cancer organised a 10k Pink Ribbon Walk in my town, most people as the name suggests, were walking but three of my friends, all avid runners signed up to run it so I thought, what the hell I’ll give it a whirl and join them. When I say join them, I decided to take it at my own pace and walk as needed – my goal was just to complete it.

I did a few short walk-run sessions coming up to the date but had never ran further than 5km when I stood at the start line. I decided to track my progress using the Nike+ app which incidentally, I now rarely run without as I find it great for training for longer distances and speed so I put on my headphones with my playlist blasting and set off with about 100 or so other runners – the walkers would start a few minutes later.

I kept up with my friends for the first 1km or so but then as I approached the first major hill, I felt my legs start to fail me and I realised I needed to adjust my pace to suit my fitness level (or lack there of!) so I slowed down and with a few short walking intervals to catch my breath, managed to finish the 10k in just under an hour.

To say I was chuffed was an understatement – I really felt as if I’d achieved something and have been running regularly ever since. So if anyone is thinking of running as a New Year’s resolution, I say go for it – if I can, anyone can!

A.W.O.L

Yes, I really am the worse blogger ever and yes, it has been over a year since my last post but I’m hoping to get back into the swing of things in 2013.

2012 was an extremely busy year for me – we moved into our new house which is far from complete but such a dream come through and I decided that it was the year I would get fit and healthy so I look forward to sharing some of my adventures very soon.

Just wanted to wish everyone a Merry Christmas in the meantime!

NOTD: Essence Make it Golden

While on a quick lunch time scout yesterday, some Essence polishes caught my eye and seeing as they were only €1.29 each I picked up the three below:
L-R: 67 Make It Golden, 76 Blue Addicted, 72 Time for Romance
These are all from the Colour & Go collection, Essence’s range of quick drying nail polishes.
I decided to give the gold shade a whirl first:

Essence Make It Golden

Deborah Lippmann Boom Boom Pow

They certainly look similar to those from the Deborah Lippman collection which retail at a much higher price and can be hard to come by. For example, Make It Golden could be compared to Boom Boom Pow, Blue Addicted is quite similar to the very popular Across The Universe while Time for Romance could be a dupe for Ruby Red Slippers.
I didn’t apply a colour underneath as I wanted to see what it is like alone and how the coverage is so here you go – this is how my nails look after three coats:

Thankfully this polish is quick drying as I think you definitely need three coats to build up the effect. However, I do think it would benefit from a base coat of something similar to Dior Vernis Haute Coleur Extreme Wear Nail Lacquer in Or Divin which Kirstie reviewed today over on Beaut.ie.

So what do you think – anyone of these take your fancy?

LAUNCH: Gorgeous To Go – Aisling McDermott

I was very excited when the lovely Beaut.ie ladies announced that Aisling’s second book, Gorgeous To Go would be released in October however, I got EXTREMELY excited when the date of the launch was given as this Saturday, 8th October – I hitting the big smoke that morning along with my buddy J for a weekend of shopping, socialising and a small bit education (more on that at a later date).
